Airplane Crashes don’t occur often but when they do, it’s usually a major disaster.

Nigeria has her history of major air mishaps involving passenger planes, many of which shook the nation and caused many to mourn their dead. When it comes to air accidents, there are usually no survivors, although some who we want to consider ‘very lucky’ have survived this disaster but with terrible burns and a story to tell, a story of hope, a story of how they’ve lived through such traumatic experience.
Below is a timeline of the horrifying airplane crashes that shook Nigeria

On October 22, 2005, 117 people died after a Boeing 737 operated by Bellview Airline crashed near Lagos.The Bellview flight 210 took off from Lagos at 8:35am for a domestic flight to Abuja. The pilot of Bellview Airlines flight 210 sent a distress signal just after taking off from Lagos for the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in stormy weather at 2045 (1945 GMT) on Saturday. The tower lost radio contact with the flight about three minutes after take-off. The next morning, the wreckage was found about 30km north of Lagos. The bad weather was said to be the cause of the crash.

On December 10, 2005, A Nigerian Sosoliso Airlines from Abuja crashed on landing in Port Harcourt, killing 117 people on board, half of them were school children of Loyola Jesuit college, Abuja who were on their way home for Christmas. These students decided to use this flight due to criminal activities on the road from Abuja to Port harcourt.

The aircraft with 110 people on board, slammed into the ground and burst into flames. Immediately after the crash, seven survivors were recovered and taken to hospitals, but only two people survived. One of the Survivors Kechi Okwuchi who had third degree burns over 65% of her body and was given a 30% chance of survival later went through over a hundred reconstructive surgeries. Kechi emerged as a finalist at the twelfth season of the America’s Got Talent in 2017 and since then been a motivation and inspiration to several women all over the world.
An investigative report had said “the crew’s decision to continue the approach beyond the decision altitude without having the runway in sight” was the immediate cause of the crash.
Other causes were dysfunctional runway lighting and poor airport design.

On October 29, 2006, a total number of 97 people lost their lives after a Boeing 737 operated by Aviation Development Corporation Airlines crashed near the Abuja airport a few minutes after take-off.
The ADC Airlines flight departed Lagos on a scheduled domestic flight to Sokoto with an intermediate stop at Abuja.
Immediately after take-off from the Abuja airport, the Boeing 737 broke up and caught fire in a corn field. A woman working on the field was reportedly killed after being struck by debris from the crash.
The primary cause of the crash was bad weather but the immediate cause was the pilot’s refusal to acknowledge prevailing weather conditions.

Nigeria was again thrown into mourning on June 3, 2012 after a Dana aircraft crashed and killed 153 occupants.
A McDonnell Douglas passenger plane, 5N-RAM, operated by Dana Air was destroyed when it crashed into a residential area of Lagos.
All 146 passengers and seven crew members were killed. And At least, six victims were found inside the buildings that were hit by the plane.

The nation and people of Kaduna state mourned again on December 15, 2012 just months after the Dana air crash. the news of four persons dead, including Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State and former National Security Adviser to the president, General Owoeye Azazi. They were reportedly burnt in a helicopter crash that occurred in the forest of Okoroba community in Nembe local government of Bayelsa State.
