Ryan Grantham, a Canadian actor, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his mother, Barbara Waite, in 2020.
On Wednesday, Justice Kathleen Ker of the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver sentenced the 24-year-old.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after being charged with first-degree murder at first.
Grantham was 21 years old when he shot his mother in the head while she was playing the piano at home on March 31, 2020.
The murder occurred in the family’s home in Squamish, British Columbia, north of Vancouver.
Prosecutors said he also planned to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but instead of going to Trudeau’s home, he drove to Vancouver police headquarters and turned himself in.
Grantham had a number of mental health issues, according to Ker, and was going through an “intense period of clinical depression” at the time of the crime.
