Tension has descended on the university community as executive members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, led by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, began meeting last week to discuss the federal government’s half-pay policy for members.
The meeting, which is currently taking place at the union’s headquarters on the campus of the University of Abuja’s Permanent Site, would deliberate on the government’s action and possibly explore response options to the development.
There are indications that members of the body at the meeting, who represent various regions of the country, may vote to declare a sit-in by lecturers in protest of the government’s action.
Some ASUU branches have already decided that members will remain at home until the government pays the salaries of members who were withheld during the action’s recent 8-month strike.
Students who had resumed academic activities following the suspension of the industrial action are concerned that if the meeting ends with the union declaring a sit-at-home strike, they will be forced to return home.
