Matteo Guendouzi has officially joined Marseille after signing a contract with Arsenal in March.

The 23-year-old had an impressive season in Ligue 1, earning a spot in France’s international squad as well as wearing the captain’s armband on occasion, and will now have the opportunity to continue his fine form in the Champions League next season after helping his side finish second.

This move has been expected for months, as his time in north London has been marred by numerous squabbles with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. The midfielder was forced to train alone following the Brighton game in 2020, shortly after football resumed after a break due to Coronavirus, and his card has been marked ever since.

While it was speculated that his loan spell with Hertha Berlin could have rekindled his Arsenal career, those hopes were quickly dashed, and he was eventually allowed to join Marseille on loan instead.

It’s a shame that a solution couldn’t be found, because I believe he could bring a lot to our team, and there is still plenty of room for him to improve with his best years ahead of him.
