On the 171st anniversary of his birth, Google honors creator Angelo Moriondo with an exquisite doodle. Moriondo was regarded as the inventor of the espresso machine. Moriondo was born in Turin, Italy, on June 6, 1851, to a family of businessmen.

Moriondo’s grandfather started a booze manufacturing business. The corporation was then managed by Moriondo’s father. Later, he and his brother and cousin founded the well-known chocolate company “Moriondo and Gariglio.”

Moriondo bought two businesses: the Grand-Hotel Ligure in Piazza Carlo Felice in the city center and the American Bar in Via Roma’s Galleria Nazionale. During Morindo’s time, coffee was very popular throughout Italy. Customers, on the other hand, were inconvenienced since they had to wait for the coffee to brew.

The doodle features a GIF of the first known expresso machine and was created by guest artist Olivia When. It was painted with coffee.

“Moriondo figured that making multiple cups of coffee at once would allow him to serve more customers at a faster pace, giving him an edge over his competitors,” Google said. Moriondo presented his espresso machine at the General Expo of Turin in 1884 after directly supervising a mechanic he enlisted to build his invention. It was awarded the bronze medal at the General Expo.

The machine consisted of a large boiler that pushed heated water through a bed of coffee grounds, with a second boiler producing steam that would flash the bed of coffee and complete the brew. The invention was then confirmed by an international patent after being registered in Paris on October 23, 1885.

Moriondo received a patent titled, “New steam machinery for the economic and instantaneous confection of coffee beverage, method ‘A. Moriondo’.” Moriondo continued to improve and patent his invention in the following years.
