Hollywood actor, Johnny Depp wins defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard

With the jury’s final verdict, Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard has come to a close, and the actor has been proclaimed the trial’s winner.

Heard will be required to pay Depp a total of $15 million ($10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive penalties), however the final sum will be only $10.35 million, and Depp will also be required to pay his ex-wife $2 million.

The jury has been deliberating for about 14 hours.

Depp sued Heard for defamation for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Depp alleges that the report cost him lucrative acting role,  despite the fact that he was not identified in the article.

Heard countersued for $100 million, claiming that Depp’s lawyer exaggerated her assault allegations. Heard and Depp began dating in 2009 and married in 2015.

The defamation trial has been ongoing since April, with jurors hearing over a hundred hours of testimony in total. They’ve heard from scores of witnesses, including Depp and Heard in person.
