Suspected terrorists opened fire on worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in the Owo region of Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria, killing a large number of people.
The terrorists, who are thought to be bandits, stormed the church on Sunday morning during mass.
According to sources, the terrorists sprayed worshippers with bullets as they entered the church, killing a large number of people.
It was gathered that many worshippers were killed and numerous others were injured as a result of the attack at the church, which is near to the Olowo of Owo’s palace.
According to a source, the incident produced chaos in the region, with residents in the church’s neighborhood fleeing for their lives.
Another account reported that, herdsmen allegedly invaded the church and killed worshippers.
Many victims were seen to be dead in gruesome videos posted on the internet.
The death toll has been estimated to be around 50.
According to reports, the injured and deceased were brought to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for treatment.
Many injured patients were reportedly sent to private hospitals in addition to the Federal Medical Centre.
The authorities were not to provide a full statement on the development as of the time of reporting this story.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, said the command was yet to ascertain the cause the incident.
“The Commissioner of Police is on his way to the scene to ascertain the cause of the incident. We have been hearing some many things about it but I will get back to you,” she said.
Within the hour, the police are anticipated to offer a briefing.
