Pope Francis, the Pontifical head of the Roman Catholic Church, has stated that Sex outside Marriage is not the most serious sin.

While on a flight from Greece to Italy, Pope Francis was in a question and answer session with some reporters. Inquiries were made on the resignation of the archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit. The archbishop had voluntarily stepped down of his position in the church earlier this month after he was alleged to have engaged in a consensual sexual relationship with a woman, as published in a French Magazine.

Though Aupetit refuted the allegations, he pleaded for forgiveness over his past behaviors, expressing that he had “poorly handled” the relationship.

According to Aupetit,

“It was a failing on his part, a failing against the sixth commandment [forbidding adultery],”

Pope Francis in reaction to the incident during the inquiry explained,

“But not a total one.”

The Pope said that he accepted the bishop’s resignation only due to the aching “gossip,” while referring to the situation as “an injustice.”

“Sins of the flesh are not the most serious,” adding that pride and hatred are “the most serious”.

“That’s why I accepted the resignation of Aupetit: not on the altar of truth but the altar of hypocrisy.”
