Gunna, an American rapper, was released from prison after pleading guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge in a massive gang indictment. The case revolves around the YSL label, which was founded in 2016 by rapper Young Thug and two others. The label, to which Gunna is also signed, is described as a “criminal street gang” by authorities.

According to TMZ, the Grammy-nominated rapper entered a pre-negotiated plea known as an Alford plea on Wednesday and was sentenced to 5 years in prison, with one year commuted for time served. The remaining four will be suspended pending completion of community service and other special requirements.

After accepting the plea deal, Gunna issued a statement claiming that when his rap career took off in 2016, he didn’t think of YSL as a gang. He stated that he was only concerned with entertainment, even if it meant exaggerating the “Black urban” lifestyle.

He added;

“My focus of YSL was entertainment – rap artists who wrote and performed music that exaggerated and ‘glorified’ urban life in the Black community.”

Gunna also stated that he is looking forward to giving back to his community and that he wants the youth to understand that gangs and violence are gateways to their demise.

Young Thug remains in jail, awaiting a trial that is expected to draw “around 300 witnesses.”
