Twitter in an announcement on Tuesday, 30th November, placed a ban on the sharing of photos, videos, and other information of users without their consent.

A blog post on the official handle of the Twitter site stated posts of other users shared without their permission would be removed from the site.

The microblogging platform explained that a first-person report or one from an authorized representative of Twitter is a prerequisite to gaining permission to share other users’ posts.

Exceptions were made to this Twitter ban, as media files shared through the accounts of public figures, were perceived to be of public interest and value to public discourse; and as such could be shared by everyone.

The blog post by Twitter read:

“While our existing policies and Twitter Rules cover explicit instances of abusive behavior, this update will allow us to take action on media that is shared without any explicit abusive content, provided it’s posted without the consent of the person depicted. This is a part of our ongoing work to align our safety policies with human rights standards, and it will be enforced globally starting today.”
