Tobi Amusan of Nigeria won her first gold medal and made history in the early hours of Monday, July 25, when she broke the women’s 100m hurdles world record at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Tobi Amusan set a new African record and the fastest time in the competition’s history with her opening performance of 12.40 seconds.
Amusan’s time is two hundredths of a second faster than Glory Alozie’s time of 12.44 seconds in the event 23 years ago in Seville, Spain.
She topped the list of qualifiers for the semifinals on the final day of the championships before winning the final. She was also the only Nigerian female 100m hurdles runner to advance to the competition’s final round.
