Despite Mikel Arteta’s desire to oversee another busy summer, Arsenal have been dealt a major setback in their pursuit of Youri Tielemans. The 25-year-old Leicester City midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners’ business elsewhere in the window appears to have played a role in the midfielder reconsidering his short-term options.
Following Porto’s confirmation that they have reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of Fabio Vieira, Mikel Arteta’s side have ‘cooled’ their interest in Tielemans, according to Sky Sports. According to the report, the Belgium international is increasingly likely to sign a one-year contract extension at the King Power Stadium in addition to his current deal.
Arsenal have long admired Tielemans, but with the Gunners agreeing a £34 million deal for Porto star Vieira, their interest has waned. It’s unclear whether Edu will pursue another move for the Belgian, but it’s widely assumed that the north Londoners will only sign one central midfielder this window, and their preferred candidate is the Portuguese technician.
