Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube and one of the first Google employees, announced her resignation in a personal update on the video-sharing platform on Thursday, February 16.
Wojcicki, 54, who began working at Google in her garage nearly 25 years ago, will be succeeded by her deputy Neal Mohan, a senior advertising and product executive who joined Google in 2008.
The shift comes as YouTube’s advertising revenue fell for the second quarter in a row, owing to intense competition for viewing time from video services like TikTok and Facebook’s Reels, as well as streaming services like Netflix.
Mohan was named YouTube’s chief product officer in 2015. In the role, he concentrated on expanding YouTube Shorts, Music, and subscription offerings.
Wojcicki stated that she will devote her time to “family, health, and personal projects,” and that she plans to take an advisory role at Alphabet.
She was previously Google’s senior vice president of ad products before taking over as CEO of YouTube in 2014.
