Dr Chike Akunyili husband of Late Prof. Dora Akunyili, former DG of NAFDAC and Information & Communication Minister has been reportedly shot dead while returning to Enugu from a meeting in Onitsha. He was reportedly accosted by the gunmen who opened fire on his vehicle, killing him, his driver and police orderly at the spot.
A source close to the family, who preferred anonymity, has confirmed the killing but declined further comments.
“He was travelling along the Old Onitsha Enugu Highway when they struck,” the source said under anonymity because public comments on the matter has not been granted until a formal statement has been issued.
The remains of the 3 of them have been deposited at the hospital, ahead of burial and further police investigation. Before his sudden demise, Dr Chike was running one of the biggest hospitals in Enugu, St. Leo’s Hospital, he graduated top of his class with a First class and spent a large chunk of his professional career treating folks, more of which were on charitable grounds.
This attack has come amidst raging insecurity in the South-East, fueled largely by armed herdsmen, separatist agitators and even security forces.
Dr Akunyili lost his wife to cancer in 2014. He was survived by their six children.
[Update] A pretty gory video surfaced online some hours ago showing the now late Dr Akunyili struggling for life in the pool of his blood with his face battered.
