The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have instructed their members to go on strike beginning November 14.
According to Channels TV, the agreement was reached at an unusual national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the unions, nationwide mobilisation of members and supporters has begun immediately.
The announcement comes days after Joe Ajaero, the president of NLC, was reportedly picked up from the Imo council secretariat of the congress in Owerri by heavily armed police officers.
According to the NLC, Ajaero was attacked and blindfolded shortly after being arrested by security personnel.
The NLC president’s phones and personal items, according to the union, have not been returned.
The Imo police command, however, stated that Ajaero was not arrested but was placed in protective custody to escape being lynched by a crowd.
According to police, the NLC president got into a heated fight with several protesters at the Imo airport.
The attack on Ajaero was condemned by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
According to Tony Ojukwu, executive secretary of the NHRC, perpetrators of the assault on Ajaero must be held accountable to act as a deterrent to others, and it is illegal to arrest unarmed individuals.
